The Sacred Lake:
Built by Thutmosis III in about 1450 B.C. this is the largest lake of any temple. The lake rests near the Obelisks of Hatshepsut and the giant Scarab. It was originally fed by a canal from the Nile, but is now fed by ground water.
Seidel and Schulz quote the Karnak text, "my majesty built a lake that the divine body might be rowed in everlasting labor in order to journey across the waters on his great feast days at the New Year." The Sacred Lake boasts covered stone ramps so that the resident Geese, sacred to the god Amun, could easily get to the water. Excavation also discovered the poultry pens where the Geese were kept!
