Cairo: June 6, 2007: Mosque of Sultan Hasan

In 634 the Arabian tribes united under Islam and from 642 to 868 Egypt was a Province of Caliphate. By the 1300s Cairo was the largest city in the word and had become the “first city of Islam,” Egypt was a center for trade and their wealth was evidenced in the architecture of the Mamluck period 1250 – 1517 (Lapidus 109). The Mosque of Sultan Hasan (1356-1363) is a prime example of Mamluck architecture (notes).
